An AI SMS chatbot answers your customers' text messages automatically, from your own knowledge base, at any hour. A customer texts your business number, the AI replies in a few short lines, and a person on your team can take over the thread when it needs human judgment. This guide explains where SMS support works well, the rules that make text different from web chat (message length, consent, and STOP keywords), how to choose an SMS provider, and how to set up an AI SMS chatbot step by step.

What Is an AI SMS Chatbot?

An AI SMS chatbot is an AI agent connected to a phone number. When a message arrives, the SMS provider (for example Twilio, Telnyx, or Vonage) forwards it to the chatbot over a webhook. The chatbot finds the relevant content in your knowledge base, writes a short answer, and sends it back through the same provider to the customer's phone.

This is different from two older kinds of SMS automation:

  • Keyword auto-responders reply only to exact words such as "HOURS" or "PRICE". Anything else gets a generic message.
  • Bulk SMS tools send one-way campaigns and reminders. They are not built to hold a conversation.
  • An AI SMS chatbot reads a free-text question, such as "can I still return the shoes I bought last month?", and answers it from your actual policies.

The quality of the answers depends on retrieval: the AI must find the right passage in your content before it writes. If you want the details, our guide to building a knowledge base for your AI chatbot covers what content to add and how to structure it.

Why Offer Customer Support by Text?

Many customers never open your website when they have a question. They already have your number from an order confirmation, a receipt, a delivery note, or a sign on your shop window, and texting is the fastest thing to do. SMS also has some practical advantages over other channels:

  • It works on every phone. The customer does not need an app, an account, or a data connection.
  • It is asynchronous. The customer can send a question and read the answer later, without keeping a chat window open.
  • It fits people on the move. Delivery customers, patients on the way to an appointment, and field-service clients often text instead of calling.

The problem is staffing. If your team answers texts by hand, customers who text at 10 p.m. wait until morning. An AI SMS chatbot closes that gap for routine questions and leaves the rest to your team.

What an SMS Chatbot Should (and Should Not) Handle

Not every text belongs with the AI. Use this split as a starting point and adjust it to your business.

Good fit for the AI

  • Opening hours, locations, and contact details
  • Shipping, return, and refund policies
  • How to track an order or reset a password
  • Accepted payment methods
  • Product and service questions answered on your website
  • Questions in other languages

Hand to a person

  • Complaints and angry customers
  • Refund exceptions and anything that needs approval
  • Account-specific changes the AI cannot verify
  • Medical, legal, or financial advice
  • Anything the knowledge base does not cover
  • Customers who ask for a human

The right-hand column matters as much as the left. A chatbot that guesses instead of escalating does more damage on SMS than on web chat, because the customer has fewer visual cues that they are talking to a bot. Our guide to AI chatbot human handoff covers how to define these moments and what a clean transfer looks like.

SMS Is Different: Five Rules for AI Text Replies

A good web chat answer can be a bad text message. Plan for these constraints before you go live.

1. Keep replies short

Carriers bill SMS per segment. One segment holds up to 160 characters of plain Latin text (GSM-7 encoding). A longer answer is split into several segments, and each one costs money. Aim for two or three short sentences, and link to a page for the full detail.

2. Watch the character set

If a message contains a character outside GSM-7, such as an emoji, a curly quote, or many non-Latin scripts, the whole message switches to UCS-2 encoding. Then a segment holds only 70 characters. One emoji can more than double the cost of a reply. Keep AI replies in plain text.

3. No formatting, buttons, or cards

SMS has no bold text, no bullet lists, no quick-reply buttons, and no product cards. Markdown shows up as stray asterisks on the customer's phone. The AI must write plain sentences.

4. Cap how much the AI can send

Every outbound text costs money, and a looping conversation (or a misbehaving sender) can run up a bill. Set a limit on reply length and on how many AI replies one number can get per day.

5. Decide what happens with photos

Customers sometimes text a photo of a damaged item or a screenshot of an error. A text-only AI cannot read it. Decide in advance whether the AI sends a short "I can only read text" reply or whether a person picks up those messages.

Consent, STOP, HELP, and 10DLC: The Compliance Basics

Business texting has rules that web chat does not. This section is an overview, not legal advice. Check the rules for each country you text, and ask a lawyer if you are unsure.

In the United States, the wireless industry follows the CTIA Messaging Principles and Best Practices (May 2023 edition). These voluntary guidelines expect businesses to:

  • Get consent before they text a consumer. A customer who texts you first starts the conversation. Sending them marketing messages later is a separate question.
  • Honor opt-outs. "STOP" is the standard keyword, and common words such as "unsubscribe", "cancel", "end", and "quit" should work too. After one confirmation, no more messages go to that number.
  • Give customers a way to get help. A HELP keyword with contact details is the common pattern.

For an AI chatbot, opt-out handling must sit outside the AI. If a customer texts STOP, neither the AI nor a human agent should be able to send them another message until they opt back in, usually by texting START.

US businesses that text from ordinary 10-digit local numbers also need 10DLC registration: you register your brand and your messaging campaign through your SMS provider, which submits them to The Campaign Registry. Unregistered traffic is likely to be filtered or blocked. Toll-free numbers use a separate verification process. Start registration early, because it is the step most likely to delay your launch.

Choosing an SMS Provider: Twilio vs Telnyx vs Vonage

An AI chatbot does not replace your SMS provider. The provider owns the phone number, delivers the messages, and bills you per segment. BubblaV connects to your own account at Twilio, Telnyx, or Vonage. If you already use one of them, start there. If not, the table shows how each one works with BubblaV.

You can also connect more than one provider at the same time, for example one number per market. Each line keeps its own conversations. A STOP from a customer applies to every connected SMS line for that phone number.

How to Set Up an AI SMS Chatbot with BubblaV

BubblaV is an AI chatbot that learns from your website, files, and Q&A. The same knowledge base answers your website visitors and your SMS customers. The SMS channel is available on all plans, including Free, and your SMS provider bills you directly for messages. Human takeover in the inbox needs the Pro plan (see plans and pricing). These steps use Twilio; the Telnyx and Vonage flows are similar.

Step 1: Prepare Your Provider Account

Get an SMS-capable phone number or a Messaging Service with at least one number. For US traffic, complete A2P 10DLC registration for local numbers or toll-free verification for toll-free numbers. Upgrade from a trial account, because Twilio trial accounts cannot send the AI's custom replies.

Step 2: Connect SMS in BubblaV

Go to Dashboard → your website → Integrations, find the SMS (Twilio) card, and click Connect. Paste your Account SID and Auth Token from the Twilio Console. BubblaV validates them and loads your numbers and Messaging Services.

Step 3: Choose the Number

Select one phone number or one Messaging Service. BubblaV sets the webhook for you. If another app already uses that webhook, BubblaV asks before it overwrites it, and it restores the previous webhook if you disconnect later.

Step 4: Text the Bot Yourself

When the card shows Connected, text your number with your real top questions. Fix weak answers by adding content to the knowledge base, not by rewording the question.

Step 5: Answer from the Unified Inbox

SMS conversations appear in Live Support with an SMS badge, next to your website chats and other channels in the unified inbox. On Pro, open a conversation and type a reply. It goes straight to the customer's phone, the AI pauses while you are active, and it resumes when you leave.

BubblaV applies SMS rules to the AI for you. AI replies are short plain text with no formatting or buttons, capped at 4 segments each. Each sender gets at most 20 AI replies in a rolling 24-hour window; your agents can still reply after that. STOP, START, and HELP keywords are handled outside the AI, and an opt-out shows as a badge on the conversation. The AI answers in 100+ languages.

The SMS (Twilio) setup guide covers trial accounts, costs, and error codes. The unified inbox documentation explains how your team works across channels.

AI SMS Chatbot Launch Checklist

  • Provider account upgraded from trial; SMS-capable number ready
  • 10DLC or toll-free verification complete for US traffic
  • Top 20 customer questions answered in the knowledge base
  • Test texts sent from a real phone, including STOP and START
  • A teammate has taken over and replied to a test SMS conversation
  • Number published where customers look: receipts, emails, contact page

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Launching before registration is approved. In the US, unregistered 10DLC traffic is likely to be filtered. Your test texts may arrive while real customer replies do not.

Reusing long web chat answers. A five-paragraph answer becomes several billed segments and is hard to read on a phone. Write short answers in your Q&A and link to the full page.

Letting the AI guess. On SMS, a wrong answer about a refund or a delivery date is easy to screenshot and forward. Make sure the AI answers only from your content, and that it hands the conversation to a person when the content does not cover the question.

Treating SMS as a separate silo. If texts land in a different tool from your web chats and email, your team loses context. Route every channel into one inbox.

The Bottom Line

An AI SMS chatbot lets customers get answers by text at any hour, from the same knowledge base that powers your website chat. Start with routine questions, keep replies short and plain, respect STOP from day one, and finish 10DLC registration before you launch. Then let your team take over the conversations that need a person.

AI SMS Chatbot FAQ

Common questions about answering customer text messages with AI.

What is an AI SMS chatbot?

An AI SMS chatbot is an AI agent connected to a business phone number. It reads incoming text messages, finds the answer in your knowledge base, and replies by SMS. A person on your team can take over the conversation when needed.

Do I need a Twilio account to add AI to SMS?

You need an account with an SMS provider that owns your number and delivers messages. BubblaV works with your own Twilio, Telnyx, or Vonage account, and the provider bills you directly for each message.

How long can an AI text message reply be?

One SMS segment holds up to 160 plain Latin characters, or 70 characters if the message contains emoji or other non-GSM-7 characters. Longer replies are split into several billed segments. BubblaV caps each AI reply at 4 segments.

What happens when a customer texts STOP?

The customer is opted out. In BubblaV, neither the AI nor your agents can text that number until the customer texts START. The opt-out applies to every connected SMS line for that phone number.

Do I need 10DLC registration?

If you text US customers from a 10-digit local number, yes. You register your brand and campaign through your SMS provider. Toll-free numbers need toll-free verification instead.

Can a human agent take over an SMS conversation?

Yes. In BubblaV, SMS conversations appear in the Live Support inbox with an SMS badge. On the Pro plan, an agent can reply directly to the customer's phone, and the AI pauses while the agent is active.
